The Heat is On!  Confronting Climate Change in the Classroom

A National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center, the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) is based at the University of Kansas.   CReSIS focuses its research on understanding the role of the polar ice sheets in sea level rise as a response to global climate change.  This year's course, “The Heat is On! Confronting Climate Change in the Classroom,” will focus on global climate change and its interactions with the cryosphere, and will be offered at the University of Kansas. The course will consist of three days in person at your respective university and ten online assignments over approximately a 20 week period.

Objectives:
Participants of this workshop will:

  • Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of climate change, including global and regional impacts.
  • Understand basic ice sheet dynamics and the tools used to measure the polar ice sheets.
  • Understand the role of the polar ice sheets in the climate system and sea level rise.
  • Develop a set of classroom resources and a plan for their implementation.
  • Become familiar with a variety of climate change resources available for classroom use.

Benefits:
  • Your choice of 3 graduate credits (tuition and fees paid by CReSIS) or 3 CEU's and a $400 stipend.

Schedule:

January 24: Orientation Day -in person at your respective university.
